SAINT PAUL, MN – Karin Housley, Minnesota state senator and Republican candidate for United States Senate, issued the following statement on President Trump’s decision to exit the Iran nuclear deal:
“I applaud President Trump’s decision to pull the United States out of the Iran nuclear deal and reimpose sanctions against the country. While we all have a vested interest in a nuclear-free Iran, the President’s decision to exit the deal is necessary for both the United States’ domestic interests and our interests abroad. The deal was flawed from its inception and simply has not gone far enough in making sure Iran does not continue the development of its nuclear arsenal.
The deal has done little to stabilize a region wrought with conflict, nor has it forced Iran to substantially reduce its stockpile of enriched uranium or eliminate – and many of the sanctions come with an expiration date. I agree with the President in that the only way to move forward toward a safe and secure world is by withdrawing from the deal altogether and bringing Iran back to the table to negotiate a deal on our own terms. As a member of the U.S. Senate, I will work with the President and Members of Congress toward our shared goal: a more prosperous America and a safer world.”
