Statement from Karin Housley on Tina Smith’s vote against confirmation of CIA director

ST. PAUL, MN – Karin Housley, Minnesota state senator and Republican candidate for United States Senate, issued the following statement in response to Senator Tina Smith’s vote against Gina Haspel’s confirmation as director of the CIA:

“Tina Smith has been blindly following the ‘obstructionist Democrat’ playbook since she first got to Washington, so it’s no surprise she voted against Gina Haspel’s confirmation as CIA Director. Not only is Ms. Haspel the first woman to lead the CIA, she is highly qualified, widely respected, and loves her country. As our nation confronts unprecedented and extremely challenging national security threats, there is no question Ms. Haspel has what it takes to lead our intelligence agencies with honor, integrity, and distinction.

“It is unconscionable that Tina Smith ignored Ms. Haspel’s merit and voted against her confirmation because it was the politically expedient thing to do. Nearly 80% of Tina Smith’s votes as a U.S. Senator have been to obstruct the President’s agenda – and Minnesotans deserve better. Confirmations of presidential appointments should be based on individual merit, not turned into political football. Our nation is far too great to settle for anything less.”
