Karin Housley responds to proposed PolyMet amendment

SAINT PAUL, MN – Karin Housley, Minnesota state senator and Republican-endorsed candidate for United States Senate, issued the following statement regarding Sen. Tina Smith’s proposed PolyMet amendment:

“Tina Smith’s sudden support for the PolyMet proposal is pandering at its best. As lieutenant governor and chief of staff, Tina Smith spent the bulk of her tenure obstructing the decade-long process of getting this economic lifeline approved, threatening the region’s economic viability in the process. Now that she’s running for election, her position has suddenly changed – all in an attempt to secure votes in an area that was once a DFL stronghold.

“From the beginning, I have unequivocally supported the PolyMet proposal – and the hundreds of jobs that would come with it. This is about respecting the livelihoods of Minnesotans on the Iron Range, not pandering to win an election. In the U.S. Senate, I will be a relentless advocate for northern Minnesota – and not just when it’s politically convenient.”
